I heard about this on the radio a couple of days ago and finally got around to watching it on Youtube. It is simply amazing. Even if you’re not a fan of football, you need to watch this. I don’t know how anyone can watch this and not smile. Then again I have a special appreciation for Division III football because I spent four years enjoying some of the “finest” football in college history. The Sports Guy even mentioned us (see #5) in a very special online article. But enough about my sad history…take a look at this video and enjoy.

Ok, I realize that no one cares what I had for lunch, but is this not a thing of beauty? One of the best things about living in Chicago(land) is being able to get Lou Malnati’s. When I lived in California, I had Lou’s delivered to me (they deliver anywhere in the U.S.) once in awhile, but it’s so much better having it fresh out of the oven from Lou’s. L.A. doesn’t really have pizza; they have California Pizza Kitchen. New York pizza can be good, I admit, but I really think there’s nothing like Chicago deep dish. What’s the best pizza you’ve ever had?

Okay, on to Thing 3

I’ve been familiar with IM for awhile now but I don’t use it much outside of work-related stuff. I’m on the computer all the time at home but I just don’t use IM to communicate with friends much. Sometimes my family will use iChat to video chat with each other, but that’s about it.

At work, I try to login to my IM account regularly. A few people in the library know my screen name (try me at “kongtemplation” from now on) and we’ve used IM to chat about projects. Using meebo rooms or group chats is a nice way to have a quick virtual meeting with colleagues. Of course, IM at work can quickly get out of hand. Many years ago, I interned (i.e., worked for free!) at a film production company and the person I worked for was on IM the entire time she was in the office. And I don’t mean just monitoring it. She was typing away every minute she was at work. Mostly with other film industry types…lots of laughter, tears, gasps…basically lots of gossip! That “ding” sound got to be extremely annoying!

I think providing IM reference service is a no-brainer. It’s easy to set up and easy to use (for both librarians and patrons). It’s just another way for people to contact us. I’m excited that we’re doing IM ref now. Anyone can go to ask.skokielibrary.info and chat with us. My question now is…video chat reference anyone? :)

Btw, here’s another site called No Slang that I’ve used to decipher mind-boggling acronyms.

I just saw this while looking for films by Asian Americans. I must see this movie!

Don’t watch this if you’re easily offended.

Wired magazine has a nice article about this movie.

I volunteered to come up with a list of movies that might interest people who either watched The Namesake and liked it or are on the hold list to get it from the library and need something else to watch in the meantime. It’s basically the same thing we do with our book read-a-likes only it’s a list of movies instead. Here’s my tentative list of movies that have something to do with Indian Americans and/or India:

  • American Desi. 2001.

  • Bride and Prejudice. 2004.

  • Cheeni Kum. 2007.

  • Gandhi. 1982.

  • Heat and Dust. 1983.

  • Householder. 1963.

  • Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India. 2001.

  • Legally Desi. 2004.

  • Mississipi Masala. 1991.

  • Mistress of Spices. 2005.

  • Mitr, My Friend. 2001.

  • Monsoon Wedding. 2001.

  • Passage to India. 1984.

  • Rang De Basanti. 2006.

  • Return from India. 2002.

  • The River. 1951.

  • Water. 2005. Rated PG-13. DVD W WORLD (HINDI)

If you have any suggestions to add to this list or if you question the inclusion of one of the movies listed above, feel free to leave a comment.

Another way to approach it would be to come up with a list of movies dealing with the American immigrant experience, whatever that means. This is more difficult for some reason. Any ideas?
