Regarding Thing 6 on the 10 Things.

I’ve had a delicious account for awhile now, but I’ve never really used it regularly. I love the idea behind it and the ability to share websites with others in my network, but I’m having trouble breaking away from my habit of saving websites to my browser’s bookmark toolbar. I feel like I have my own system of keeping my bookmarks arranged by category. Things got a little better when I installed the Firefox add-on to integrate my delicious account into Firefox, but I still end up using the bookmarks toolbar more often than not.

One of the problems I have with delicious is the craziness that I’ve created with my tags. I’ve cleaned it up a little bit in recent months, but it’s still kind of a mess. But maybe that’s the point of tagging and I shouldn’t worry so much about having a controlled vocabulary that I can somehow manage. I need to think less like a cataloger and let things flow naturally…nah!

Still, I do think delicious can come in very handy for reference staff at any kind of library. Instead of having a link directory like the kind you see on the IPL or LII, you can make recommendations through a library delicious account. Many libraries are already doing this. The thing is, you just need to keep up with it and make sure that people are adding useful websites and tagging them in a way that people will find them. This library seems to be doing a good job of it. And here’s a bit about using delicious as subject guides for libraries. Doing something like this here at Skokie PL would be worthwhile in my opinion.

Btw, I added my recent delicious bookmarks to the right of this page, so check it out. You can join my network and we can share bookmarks with each other. What could be more fun! Can you feel the excitement! :)

    Hi Richard,

Thank you for mentioning the del.icio.us libraries list. Please let me know when Skokie creates a del.icio.us page and I’ll be sure to add it to the list.

    Regards,

P.S. I know what you mean about tag craziness in del.icio.us — it’s easy for to get carried away with tags! I have added you to my network too.

Thanks for visiting Angela. We actually have a delicious account for the library, but as far as I know, we haven’t fully committed to using it as a tool for reference and haven’t publicized it to the public yet.
