DDos Attack!
Filed Under Blogging, Technology | Leave a Comment
Last night I was working on this blog and contemplating a switch to a different Wordpress theme, when suddenly I started having trouble accessing anything on the site. I kept refreshing the page, checked my wireless internet connection, and tried using different browsers, but nothing worked. I finally called my web hosting provider and asked them if they saw any problems with my domain. The tech support guy takes a few seconds to pull up my account and then says, “Whoa!” This is something you don’t want to hear from any tech support person.
It turns out my domain was the victim of a DDos attack. The tech support guy explained it to me and I think I understand what it is now, but I’m still not sure what I need to do at this point. I asked him how long my domain would be down and he told me that they were working to fix the problem and that it could take anywhere from 2 hours to 2 weeks to complete. Well, it’s been less than 24 hours, and my site apparently works now, with a few minor issues here and there.
If you’re hosting your own websites, beware of DDos attacks! They are not fun!

Wordle Fun

This is a word cloud of my delicious tags, which are pretty much a mess. It’s generated by Wordle.net. My delicious cloud isn’t exactly captivating, but try doing this with a speech, book excerpt, or the lyrics to your favorite song and the results could be interesting. There’s a gallery where you can see other word clouds that have been created.
Here’s one using the A-Z topic list on my library’s research web page:

Another accident on the Edens Spur
Filed Under Local | Leave a Comment
On my way to work today, I came up against some bad traffic near the Edens Spur and Waukegan Rd. in Northbrook. I was lucky enough to be able to get off at Waukegan and take a local route, but on my way to work I saw at least 7 emergency vehicles going towards that area.
It turns out there was another accident on the Edens Spur. This is the third major accident on that stretch of the expressway in the past two weeks. According to an article about the accident, today’s accident occurred around 11:40am. The scary thing, for me at least, is that I was approaching that area right around 11:42am, so if I left two minutes earlier from home, I might have been right in the middle of it all. I hope the people involved in the accident are going to be okay, but the article indicates that one person is likely dead with several others injured.
I think I need to find an alternate route to work. Maybe take Route 41 even if it takes longer.

Who’s Craig and what’s this list of his?

I taught a class called ”Using Craigslist to Buy, Rent, Sell and More” tonight and it went well. One student brought a souvenir book from the 1st Taste of Chicago in 1977. She created an ad for it and posted it under collectibles for $25 obo, which I thought was kind of a low price.
Anyways, here’s the description of the class:
“Learn how to use Craigslist, a popular website where you can view or post classified ads for free. We’ll teach you the basics about buying, selling, and trading on Craigslist. If possible, bring information and pictures of an item you wish to sell. Basic computer skills and an active Web-based email account are required.”

Saw this FAIL submission mentioned on two of my favorite blogs here and here, and it’s way too depressing not to share with others. This guy is looking for a “video rental store but for books”! Is there anyone out there who knows of such a place? Anyone?!
