One of the best things about the village where I work is its diversity. With nearly 100 different languages spoken in Skokie homes, it’s one of the most diverse places in Illinois. Every year the community celebrates this diversity with a Festival of Cultures. It’s basically a huge gathering of people celebrating each others’ cultures with performances, booths for each culture, children’s activities, and food….lots of food (had the gyros myself)!

PinwheelsThe library always takes part in the event by bringing the bookmobile and having a table set up with information and goodies for everyone. Today I had the opportunity to work the table and I really enjoyed it. Besides spreading joy to the masses by handing out pinwheels to every kid and adult who passed by, I also had the chance to talk with people about the library. A lot of people told me how much they love the library and how important it is to them. My favorite comment came from a woman whom I asked whether or not she uses the library. She kind of looked at me in a slightly surprised way and said to me matter-of-factly, “That’s why I live here.” She lives in Skokie because of the library! How cool is that!
